Cotagion (2011)

Depiction of Hong Kong:

After a few brief scenes on both patients exposing the disease in Hong Kong, they have died in a short period of time. One of the epidemic experts, Dr. Orantes (Marion Cotillard) from CDC is sent to Hong Kong tracking the source of the disease with the help of Hong Kong government.

The depiction of Hong Kong is a mixed imagery of urban and rural scenes, while Beth and unnamed waiter commute in the city, Dr. Orantes is kidnapped by her local colleague Sun Feng to his village. Simply because he wants to secure vaccine supplies for his village. In a rural village with crops and dense farm house, innocent young kids are staying in a single house with their masks on, hoping vaccines will save their lives. However, as the movie adopts multi-narrative with multiple protagonists, scenes taken place in Hong Kong are not extensive enough to mean anything. One could only conclude is Chinese character in the movie is selfish enough to kidnap an epidemic expert in order to save his villagers.

Inspired by the SARS in 2003 and flu pandemic in 2009, Contagion is a movie with multi-narrative depicting an epidemic firstly outbroke in Hong Kong, which wiped out huge amount of population in the world. While medical experts in Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are figuring out a cure, in order to save millions of people, ordinary people are also fighting the disease and overcoming the trauma of losing their loved one. Gwyneth Paltrow starred as Beth Emhoff, is the patient zero of the epidemic who have travelled to Hong Kong for business, in her staying, she has infected a local waiter who served her in the restaurant.
